While Jim is not necessarily a guest he is heavily involved with everything that happens at the historical society and there wouldn’t be much of an event without him!

Jim Leonard & Herb Kruger

Jim’s History/Background:

Jim Leonard’s journey with the Historical Society of East Pennsboro began in the fall of 2003, shortly after he retired from the railroad. Having spent decades working in a fast-paced industry, Jim was eager to give back to his community and put his interest in history to good use. He reached out to Herb Kruger, the society’s founder, and by October, he officially began his volunteer work.

Right from the start, Herb recognized Jim’s dedication and gave him a meaningful project: building a searchable census database. Jim spent the next year entering data from 1790 through 1940, creating a resource that helped the community research families and residents across generations. His attention to detail and curiosity soon led him deeper into the society’s archives, where he began organizing photographs and learning the ins and outs of the society’s growing digital collections.

In 2005, Jim played a role in preparing for the 100th anniversary of Enola Yard. That year was full of events and special programs, and it was then that Jim realized just how much East Pennsboro’s history had to offer. Though he had once considered volunteering in Perry County for genealogy research, Jim’s experiences at the historical society—and Herb’s mentorship—quickly changed his plans.

As Jim dove further into the township’s history, he became fascinated with stories like how Enola got its name and how the Enola Yard shaped the town’s development. His passion for local history continued to grow.

In 2006, Herb was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis and privately asked Jim if he would be willing to take on his responsibilities as executive director. Jim humbly accepted the challenge, promising to learn everything he could to continue Herb’s legacy. With the support of the society’s members and volunteers, Jim stepped into the role. When Herb passed away in 2007, Jim officially became executive director and has led the organization ever since.

Jim’s dedication and heart have made him an irreplaceable part of the Historical Society of East Pennsboro. He continues to learn every day, preserving the past and guiding others with the same spirit that Herb once passed on to him.
